Strawberry Square ClockBox Harrisburg, PA
Strawberry Square is a mixed-use retail and commercial complex that opened in 1978 in downtown Harrisburg. Owned and managed by the Harristown Development Corporation, a non-profit organization, the large office and retail complex occupies a full city block. At the heart of the complex is a three-story atrium, the site of this project.
Designed by Chris Dawson Architect, the colorful new ClockBox provides a second-floor conference and meeting room cantilevering into the atrium from a two-story cast-in-place concrete structure that was once the backdrop for the Chockablock Clock—a 46-foot-tall auto-kinetic sculpture that had since fallen into disrepair.
With expansive glass walls that create a seamless connection to the atrium below, the ClockBox is thoughtfully designed to host a range of meeting formats, offering both flexibility and visual openness.
The project, which received an AIA Central Pennsylvania 2024 Excellence in Design Merit Award, also features an enhanced stage that can now accommodate larger ensembles for live performances in the atrium.
GBE’s scope consisted of mechanical ventilation design, electrical power and lighting design documents, and fire protection delegated design documents.
